Job Description
TITLE: Rush Diabetes Center Coordinator
DEPARTMENT: Internal Medicine/Endocrinology

General Summary: The coordinator of the Rush Diabetes Self Management Education Center is a diabetes educator who will be responsible for the operation of the Center within the clinical outpatient practice of the Section of Endocrinology. The coordinator may have diabetes specialized training as a nurse or a registered dietitian and will work in a collaborative relationship with Rush endocrinologists, as well as with all other Rush physicians and health care providers. The Center Coordinator reports to the Director of Endocrinology.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. The Center Coordinator will be responsible for the daily operation of the Center. This will include meeting all standards described by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) for certified education programs and overseeing the planning, implementation and evaluation of the Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME). The coordinator will be responsible for initial/renewal applications for the program to the ADA.
2. The Center Coordinator will be responsible for maintaining all necessary records pertinent to the Center’s operation.
- The Center Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating the teaching activities of the other instructional staff of the Center. It is expected that the coordinator will conduct much of the educational activity of the Center, and will organize the schedule by which patients interact with the Center.
- The Center Coordinator will serve as a liaison and chair for the program staff advisory committee.
- The Center Coordinator will provide the orientation and coordinate the continuing education for the program personnel.
- The Center Coordinator will cooperate with the Practice Administrator for the Section of Endocrinology to ensure the proper and smooth flow of billing for the services of the Center, preparation of the program budget, as well as other administrative aspects of the Center’s operation.
- The Center Coordinator will set and maintain standards of care as mandated by the American Nurses Association, American Dietetic Association, the State of Illinois, American Diabetes Association, the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators, and Rush University Medical Center.
- The Center Coordinator will maintain an outcome database for all Rush University Diabetes Center patients. The Center Coordinator will develop and maintain a Continuous Quality Improvement plan as required for ADA education recognition.
- The Center Coordinator will be responsible for the following duties at the Center and at Consultants in Endocrinology:
- Adjustment of all oral and injectable medications for diabetes in order to attain normoglycemia under the direction of the patient’s endocrinologist.
- Initiation and education of all patients regarding glucose meters.
- Initiation and education of insulin therapy, byetta and symlin under direction of the patient’s endocrinologist.
- Initiation and adjustment of insulin pumps.
- Initiation, education and interpretation of glucose sensors.
- Assist attending endocrinology physicians in communication with patients regarding changes in diabetes medical treatment and lab results.
- The Center Coordinator will serve as needed on institutional or departmental committees relating to all aspects of diabetes in the Medical Center.
- The Center Coordinator will participate in clinical research endeavors for the Center and Consultants in Endocrinology.
- The Center Coordinator will serve as a clinical expert on diabetes throughout the Medical Center and will collaborate with other Medical Center staff on the implementation and improvement of diabetes care at Rush.
- The Center Coordinator will develop and edit diabetes education material for the Medical Center and the Center Coordinator will work with other Medical Center departments in this effort.
- The Center Coordinator will present diabetes lectures for Medical Center patient programs, such as Rush Generations.
- The Center Coordinator will contribute, along with other section staff, to the teaching of Rush University students, residents and fellows.
- The Center Coordinator will assist and provide diabetes training for new Rush University Medical Center employees.
- The Center Coordinator will maintain the minimum number of annual hours of continuing education necessary to meet CDE standards or ADA recognition standards.
- The Center Coordinator will plan and organize marketing strategies for the Rush University Diabetes Center. This includes developing marketing brochures and material and working with internal Medical Center physicians regarding Center services. The Center Coordinator will be responsible for organizing outside marketing events, such as the American Diabetes Association Expo
- The Center Coordinator will organize and co-lead Diabetes Support Group for the Medical Center.
Licensure:
Current State of Illinois license as either a:
Registered Nurse
OR
Registered Dietitian
Qualifications:
A candidate with a nursing background will have at least a BSN degree and 2 years of clinical experience as an RN.
OR
A candidate with a nutritional background will be at least a registered dietitian with at least 2 years of experience.
Candidates from either background must have Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) certification or will be eligible to obtain it within 2 years. The certification will be maintained every 5 years. The candidate must have academic preparation and/or experience in program management and in the care of persons with chronic disease.
